History of the Marathon
The History of the Marathon IS VERY RELEVANT
A marathon or a marathon is a long-distance race that involves running a distance of 42.195 meters (42 km). It has been part of the athletics program in the Olympic Games in the men’s category since Athens 1896, and in Los Angeles 1984 the women’s category was incorporated.
Its origin is found in the myth of the exploits of the Greek soldier Philippides, who in the year 490 BC. C. would have died of fatigue after having run about 37 km from Marathon to Athens to announce the victory over the Persian army. In reality, Pheidippides walked the road from Athens to Sparta to ask for reinforcements, which would be about 225 kilometers. Still, the myth gained a lot of popularity over what really happened.
The modern length of 42.195 meters dates back to the 1908 London Olympic Games and the Queen inadvertently established this distance as the official distance of the ultimate endurance race. This distance is what separates the English city of Windsor from the White City stadium in London. The last meters were added so that the final would take place in front of the presidential box of the stadium. The distance was definitively established as the only official distance at the IAAF congress held in Geneva in 1921, before the 1924 Paris Olympic Games.
